RJ Mitte, the actor whose portrayal of Walter “Flynn” White Jr. helped make Breaking Bad a landmark television series, has died at 34. His representatives confirmed his passing, and the Associated Press reported that he died Monday in Brownsville, Texas.

For audiences, Mitte’s place in television history is tied to the White family. Across 56 episodes of AMC’s Breaking Bad, he played a son navigating a household increasingly fractured by his father’s choices. Mitte lived with cerebral palsy, as did his character, bringing personal experience to a role that made disability visible within one of television’s most widely discussed dramas.

His career continued beyond that defining performance. His credits included The Oak Room, The Recall and The Guardians of Justice. Each offered viewers another opportunity to see an actor whose work extended beyond the character that first brought him international recognition.

Off screen, his representatives highlighted his commitment to disability awareness and inclusion. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and as president of The Mitte Foundation. His family and loved ones have requested privacy.

TMZ reported that Mitte died by suicide. However, Brownsville police told PEOPLE that the cause and manner of death remained pending amid an ongoing investigation.

Remembering Mitte means recognizing both his performances and the visibility he brought to people with disabilities. His career offers a reminder of the value of casting performers whose lived experiences can deepen a story—and of using public recognition to help others be seen.
